Our History

Peterson Engineering, Inc has worked on a wide range of projects including energy audits, studies and investigations, renovations, repairs, additions, alterations, new construction, and commissioning services. We have LEED Accredited Professionals on staff and numerous certified silver and gold projects to our credit.

With many years of experience working with Owners, Architects, Contractors, and Developers, we have developed a total Mechanical and Electrical design team approach to providing the client with the most economical design. Collectively, we have recognized and responded to the client’s requirements of having an energy efficient design that meets the latest standards while still providing for low operating and maintenance costs for entire facilities.  In order to accomplish this we use computer analyses to evaluate our lighting, power distribution, heating and air conditioning systems.  This allows us to apply our experience, optimize the various systems and integrate our solutions with the Owner to provide the best overall design and stay within budgetary guidelines.

Peterson Engineering, Inc. professionals understand that high-quality design is of little value if it cannot be delivered within the available budget.  Hence, the firm takes professional pride in its record for in-budget performance. We recognize that all projects are tied to budget limits (one dollar over the allocated cost threshold and the project cannot be awarded). Over the years we have developed estimating procedures to accurately prepare construction cost estimates during the design stage of a project.  PEI then works with the client to adjust the project scope to ensure the budget limits are met. We also routinely incorporate bid options to insure that all funds can be committed to the project if the bid comes in favorably.

For 20 years, Peterson Engineering, Inc. has provided energy modeling to assist the Government in equipment and system selections.  For over 6 years, our models have conformed to the methods of ASHRAE 90.1, Appendix G. Not only do we make sure our projects meet all the mandatory requirements for the HVAC systems, we work closely with the Architects and Electrical Engineers to ensure the facility as a whole meets and exceeds the minimum requirements in these areas as well.

The firm is committed to ensuring that we obtain complete and accurate existing condition documentation and equipment size information.  To that end, the firm has invested in state-of-the-art investigation equipment including ground penetrating radar equipment, magnetic locating instruments, underground electrical locating instruments, Baldor air flow hoods, TCI electronic flow and temperature meters, and various temperature, humidity, and pressure electronic recorders and associated software.  We are qualified to conduct flow tests for determining accurate water pressures.

In addition to our design experience, since 2008 Peterson Engineering has been providing all levels of Commissioning for projects throughout the southeast. We have performed retro-commissioning, fundamental, and enhanced commissioning on over 2.5 million square feet of buildings. The commissioning process facilitates and ensures the required communication, coordination, testing, and verification, and results in the delivery of a building whose systems perform as intended. Effective commissioning is an intentional, visible, cooperative and proactive process. It includes design review, installation verification, proper system start-ups, functional performance tests, operations and maintenance (O&M) training, and complete documentation of the systems. Through our commissioning projects, we have provided systems training for Owners’ maintenance personnel and O&M and Systems manual preparation.  Our in-house services of building pressurization testing and infrared thermo-graphy complements our energy auditing, commissioning, and design services to greatly improve existing and new building operation by ensuring no energy loss due to building envelope leakage.

In addition to serving our clients, Peterson Engineering, Inc. is committed to promoting best engineering practices in the community and the nation.  Ben Womble, P.E. serves as first alternate on the ASHRAE National Nominating Committee and on the Board of Governors of the ASHRAE Northwest Florida Chapter and Gregory Peterson, P.E., CxA, LEED AP BD+C serves on the Pensacola State College Technology Advisory Committee.
